For most of my 40 years in the trades, I didn't actually own a business—I owned a job.
Like a lot of contractors, I started out as a technician who was good at the work, assuming that was enough. When you want to grow, you naturally think the answer is just getting your name out there. But I learned the hard way that good marketing will quickly expose a broken system.
As soon as you turn the marketing on, the floodgates open. The spam calls start, and the real leads pile up faster than you can manage from a ladder. I actually have two 1-star reviews on my Google Business Profile from people I never even worked for—simply because I missed their initial call and didn't reply in time. In this industry, Google reviews are either gold or the kiss of death.
